The implementation site in the Netherlands is coordinated by the Trimbos Institute (TRIMBOS). Trimbos is an independent non-profit research and knowledge institute providing research, policy, and practice-based advice for policy makers and professionals on mental health and substance use across the life course. Trimbos has the Netherlands Expertise Centre for Tobacco control (NET) and the Expertise Centre on Alcohol (EA) to support professionals and implement evidence-based interventions for reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption, with potential reach to all 17,7 million inhabitants of the Netherlands. Trimbos collaborates closely with several partner organizations, including the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (specifically, the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Product Regulation and Control), the Netherlands Network for Tobacco Researchers, the Partnership Stop Smoking, and national health charities that are active in cancer prevention, such as the Cancer Society, Hearth Foundation and Lung Foundation. In collaboration with Santé publique France, Trimbos chairs a EuroHealthNet thematic working group on Social Marketing to Address Addictions, focussing on tobacco and alcohol prevention.
Cancer-related risks factors in their portfolio include: (a) tobacco: (i) The Taskforce Smoke-Free Start, devoted to multidisciplinary smoking cessation care to help women and their partners quit smoking before, during, and after pregnancy.64 Its interventions include a multidisciplinary e-learning “smoke-free start” for healthcare professionals, a telephone smoking cessation counselling intervention “smoke-free parents”65, a proactive referral tool,66 and a website with information for healthcare professionals and a tool for “digital care pathways”. (ii) PROMISE, aimed to adapt the current smoking cessation counselling protocol for midwives and OB-GYNs in the Netherlands to make it more applicable for low SES women.67 The project, assessed the effectiveness innovative approaches to help pregnant women with low educational levels quit smoking in a stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial.68 (iii) MyCourse, a digital interactive intervention for cancer survivors who want to quit smoking our reduce their alcohol consumption, which proven effectiveness compared to a control group.69 (iv) Quiddy, a smoking cessation app that targets young adults who want to quit smoking based on personal characteristics and encourages them to provide support towards each other during their quit attempt. (b) Alcohol consumption: (i) The Taskforce Alcohol-Free Start, which developed the multidisciplinary e-learning “Alcohol-free start” for healthcare professionals and the (free) course “Alcohol-free pregnant” for all pregnant women who would like to learn more about the harms caused by alcohol use during pregnancy. (ii) Maxx, a mHealth intervention to reduce drinking among Dutch adults (18+ years). (iii) What Do You Drink, a dynamically tailored mHealth intervention to reduce excessive drinking among Dutch lower-educated students (16-24 years). (iv) “Opgroeien in een Kansrijke Omgeving”, a Dutch prevention approach to reduce substance use and increase well-being among Dutch adolescents based on the principles of the Icelandic prevention model, an effective community-based intervention.
