On the final day of the PIECES Consortium Meeting in Florence (May 19–21, 2025), partners gathered for a focused Qualitative Research Training session designed to strengthen their understanding of key qualitative methods. This training marks a pivotal step in preparing for the qualitative evaluation activities outlined in the project’s overall evaluation plan.
The session opened with an introduction to the principles of qualitative research, blending theoretical foundations with practical guidance. Emphasis was placed on two central data collection methods—individual interviews and focus groups—which partners will use to evaluate the experiences of local implementation team members and service providers. Discussions also addressed essential considerations before and after conducting interviews, including ethical responsibilities and practical logistics.
The workshop was facilitated by a team of five experienced qualitative researchers from the PIECES project: Bethany Hipple, Femke van Nassau, Rixt Smith, Rachel O’Donell, and Victoria Porthé. Together, they introduced draft interview guides, which were reviewed and piloted collaboratively during the training, allowing participants to provide real-time feedback and test the tools in a supportive setting.
A total of 27 consortium members took part in the training. The session created a valuable space to exchange insights, clarify questions, and anticipate potential challenges in upcoming data collection efforts. The collaborative spirit and active engagement of participants contributed to an enriching and productive atmosphere. Country-specific experiences and perspectives brought depth to the discussions and informed refinements to the interview tools.
Looking ahead, the next qualitative training will be held during the 2026 PIECES Consortium Meeting in Albania. It will focus on the next phase of the research process: data coding and analysis.
