A new milestone has been reached. The PIECES Primary Cancer Prevention Implementation Toolkit (PCP-IT), the cornerstone of the project, has been completed and is now ready to be evaluated. This innovative online toolkit, consisting of six modules, is designed to guide implementers through the process of selecting and adapting primary cancer prevention programmes by identifying and addressing barriers and developing and applying tailored implementation strategies.
The PCP-IT includes a repository of primary cancer prevention programmes; a repository of determinants of practice; a repository of implementation strategies; stakeholder consultation at all stages; an online community of implementation practitioners and structured stepped process flows, instructions, examples and worksheets for working with the materials.
In order to evaluate the performance and working mechanisms of the PCP-IT, the online toolkit will be implemented in different settings. Different implementation teams in Spain, the Netherlands, Albania, the UK, Italy, Ukraine, Germany, and Ireland will be responsible for using the toolkit and selecting and adapting the cancer prevention programmes. Implementation coordinators will be in charge of overseeing the implementation process. The geographical diversity and variety of socio-cultural realities of the implementation sites and the heterogeneity of the PCP programmes provide a natural environment to gain an understanding of the successful improvement and up-scaling of PCP-IT.
A multi-site case comparison design has been chosen to generate in-depth knowledge of the performance and working mechanisms of PCP-IT. The objectives of the PIECES study are to assess whether the PCP-IT is usable and whether implementation teams are satisfied with the tool; to determine what works for whom in using the PCP-IT to select, adapt and implement PCP programmes; and to assess whether the PCP-IT is feasible and effective in improving the uptake, delivery, fidelity and sustainability of PCP programmes.
