The Netherlands is playing an active role in the PIECES Study, exploring how the Primary Cancer Prevention Implementation Toolkit (PCP-IT), also known as the PIECES Toolkit, can support the implementation of evidence-based cancer prevention programmes in real-world settings.
Led by the Trimbos Institute, Dutch implementation teams are using the toolkit to address tobacco smoking, one of the leading preventable risk factors for cancer. Five local implementation teams from municipal health services and a social welfare organisation have engaged or are currently engaging with the toolkit. Drawing on programmes available through the PIECES Repository, teams have selected and, where needed, adapted interventions to better suit their local settings and target populations.
The Dutch teams have made significant progress throughout the study. Most notably, two teams have successfully progressed through the toolkit, which consists of six modules designed to guide implementers through selecting, adapting and implementing prevention programmes. Their experiences and feedback are providing valuable insights that will help further refine the toolkit and inform its future use across Europe.
According to the users, the toolkit helped teams identify suitable programmes, adapt them to local circumstances and develop tailored implementation plans. Those who completed the process highlighted its practical value in supporting decision-making and strengthening programme delivery.
At the same time, the experience highlighted some implementation challenges. Time constraints and competing priorities occasionally affected organisations’ ability to fully engage with the process.
As the study progresses, the Dutch experience is generating valuable lessons on how the PIECES Toolkit can help organisations translate evidence into action, strengthen implementation capacity and ultimately contribute to more effective cancer prevention efforts across Europe.
