The PIECES Project is pleased to announce the publication of a new scientific paper describing the development and content of the PIECES Repository, a searchable digital catalogue of evidence-based primary cancer prevention programmes. The repository has been designed to support the identification, selection, and adaptation of proven cancer prevention interventions across diverse European settings.
Primary cancer prevention plays a crucial role in reducing the burden of cancer by addressing modifiable risk factors. However, finding high-quality programmes that are both evidence-based and suitable for local implementation can be challenging. The PIECES Repository was created to address this need by providing a centralised resource that brings together effective prevention programmes and the information needed to support their implementation.
The repository includes programmes targeting six major cancer risk factors:
- Tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure
- Alcohol consumption
- Physical activity
- Diet
- HPV infection
- UV and sun exposure
The publication outlines the methodology used to identify, assess, and catalogue programmes within the repository. In addition to information on programme content and evidence of effectiveness, the repository includes implementation-relevant details such as theories of change, programme materials where available, and contact information for programme developers and researchers.
By improving access to proven interventions, the PIECES Repository aims to bridge the gap between research and practice. It provides public health professionals, policymakers, researchers, and implementation practitioners with practical tools to support the delivery of effective cancer prevention programmes in real-world settings across Europe.
The publication represents an important milestone for the PIECES Project and contributes to the project’s broader goal of strengthening the implementation of evidence-based cancer prevention initiatives.
